Bangapi International Age Groups Open 2018

📅 1st – 10th April 2018 📍 Lotus Pang Suan Kaew, Chiangmai, Thailand

The Bangapi International Age Groups Open ran alongside the main Asian Youth Chess Championship, offering additional competitive opportunities for players of various age categories. Organised by Bangapi Chess Club in cooperation with the Thailand Chess Association, the event shared the same venue and timeframe as the continental youth championship.

The concurrent scheduling allowed participants, families, and officials to experience a full festival of youth chess in Chiangmai. Both events were held under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation.

The related events programme was designed to complement the main championship by broadening the competitive calendar in Chiangmai during the same April window. Families, coaches, and accompanying persons who travelled to Thailand found that the open tournament offered a welcoming environment for younger and developing players who might not yet be eligible for the elite continental categories. This parallel structure gave more participants a chance to experience international competition, while also allowing national federations and clubs to scout emerging talent in a less pressured setting. The cooperative effort between the organising bodies ensured that the two events ran smoothly side by side, sharing venues and support staff.

Beyond the board, these related events helped build a stronger sense of community among the chess enthusiasts gathered in Chiangmai. Players who finished their main championship games early in the day could wander over to watch the open tournament or join informal analysis sessions with peers from different countries. The atmosphere encouraged cross-cultural exchange, with young competitors from India, Vietnam, Korea, and other Asian nations sharing ideas and friendships. For many participants, the experience extended well beyond the results on the scoreboard, leaving lasting memories of the warm Thai hospitality, the vibrant local culture, and the spirit of sportsmanship that defined the entire April gathering.
